Dear Colbert Nation,
Cherish West
Issue date: 5/16/08 Section: Arts & Entertainment
Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central's satirical news show "The Colbert Report," has offered his radical opinions on America and politics in his book "I Am America (And So Can You!)."
This is the first book written by Colbert, who says he wrote the book "to fill the other 23 and a half hours of the day."
Colbert introduces himself within the first few pages of the book with a smile, handshake and appropriately titled nametag - America.
As with his television show, he egotistically explores controversial issues, such as race, religion and sex and confronts subjects such as homosexuals, immigrants and "old people."
The chapters tackle these topics, each with a witty quote from Colbert as the subhead, including; Chapter Four on Religion "Accepting Jesus As My Personal Editor," Chapter Five on Sports "When It's Okay To Shower With Men" and Chapter Fourteen on Science "Thanks For The Nukes, Now Go Away."
The book is full of ribald Colbert commentary, even in the margins and the footnote. He writes in the margin, "Sorry margin-huggers but I've got some opinions over here, too. Deal with it," and then references "Yep, down here too," in the footnote. The margin and footnote references are much like "The Word" segment of his television show.
This book is like an activity fun book, with each chapter featuring a "fun zone" that includes puzzles, mazes and web diagrams, on what some would consider risky, debatable topics. Stickers, bookmarkers and Stephen T. Colbert Award for Literary Excellence medallions make this book even more worthwhile.
Between these activities and the way the book can be put down and picked up without missing a beat, this book makes a great read for left-wing politically minded adults with Attention Deficit Disorder or any person with an open mind looking for a laugh.
This book is not a guide to understanding America and politics unless the reader holds Colbert's truths to be self-evident (also know as "truthiness"). The inside cover does warn, "You may not agree with everything Stephen says but at the very least, you'll understand that your differing opinion is wrong."
Those infatuated with Colbert, like me, or those looking for a politically charged comical book will thoroughly enjoy "I Am America (And So Can You!)."
