On April 23, Peace Over Violence hosted the tenth annual Denim Day. People all over the United Stated wore denim of any kind to take a stand against rape, sexual assault and dating violence.

In 1992, an 18-year-old girl was raped by her 45-year-old driving instructor. According to www.denimdayusa.org, the girl pressed charges but the chief judge of the Italian Supreme Court ruled against her stating "because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them and by removing the jeans it was no longer rape but consensual sex."

A press release states that, "Every two and a half minutes, somewhere in America, someone is sexually assaulted."

Denim Day raises awareness and informs people about the effect of sexual violence on the victims and everyone around them. It was also a day to encourage change and be there for those who have been affected by sexual violence.

To learn more go to www.denimdayusa.org or www.peaceoverviolence.org. To get help or emergency services call the Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network (RAINN) hotline at 800-656-HOPE (4673).
