Hollywood Hullabaloo coming to a town near you

Through all my years spent peninsuled here in the Mississippi River valley of southeast Missouri, I never thought I'd ever hear the names of someone like "Quentin Terantino" and "Viggo Mortensen" dropped into the same sentence as "Cape Girardeau." But for a few days in late December, Hollywood turns its sights on the southeast Missouri area as Cape is hit by a small invasion force of familiar film faces and production-crew lackeys for a three-day film shoot.

The Southeast campus has undergone many changes over the summer, with most occurring around the Broadway and Henderson entrance to campus. The construction was handled in three distinct phases. The first was Houck Stadium parking. The new lot creates many more parking spaces and will be monitored by security cameras for students' safety.

Excitement could be felt in the air on Oct. 3, 1930. After all of the money, hard work and time spent, finally the Cape Girardeau community could bask in the beauty and splendor of their new Houck Field Stadium. Not only was the Cape community thrilled about the dedication ceremony and football game that would follow, but also people from surrounding towns were purchasing tickets and reserving their spots for this historical day.

"A Life In Art" Makes for Lively Experience

Fans of great art need not stray far from campus. Through Oct. 22, the University Museum in Memorial Hall will feature the work of painter Burt Hasen, titled A Life in Art. Born in New York City in 1921, Hasen, who is also a World War II veteran, studied in several art schools, including the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris.

It's Going to be a "Rowdy" Fight Song

"We want to create something that the students can identify with Rowdy," said Barry Bernhardt, director of bands, in reference to the new fight song being developed in Brandt. Southeast currently uses two fight songs, "Fight SEMO" and "Fight Song," but according to Bernhardt, there needed to be something for everyone to rally behind Rowdy with.

Enrollment up 6.4%

The total undergraduate and graduate student enrollment at Southeast is up 6.4 percent from this time a year ago, according to the preliminary unofficial report that was compiled after the first day of classes this semester. The total of combined undergraduate and graduate students enrolled is at 9,425, while last year's preliminary enrollment at this time was 8,854.
