According to a recent press release on the university's web site, Southeast Hospital will staff, operate and offer an extended range of services at the Campus Health Clinic, formerly known as the Center for Health and Counseling.
Some of the new services will include diagnoses of all kinds of illnesses, physical examinations, immunizations, eating disorder information, mental health specialist referrals, ice packs and crutches for those unlucky enough to climb Hernia Hill on a rainy day.
Southeast President Kenneth W. Dobbins stated in the aforementioned press release that this new partnership will bring efficiencies and conveniences that could not have been offered before.
One excellent benefit of the new Clinic addition is the ability to bill insurance health providers, thereby reducing extra costs for students. Because of this, service can be given to faculty and staff as well.
Second-year Southeast student Barnabas Collins is excited about the new and improved Campus Health Clinic. "To me, the clinic was always just a place rather like the nurse's office at high school. You didn't go there for big problems. Now, with the hospital working with it, if anything big goes wrong, I won't have to drive to a doctor's office or hospital."
Equally exciting for medical students is the potential for learning opportunities, including clinical rotations for nursing and athletic training students and perhaps internships in the future.
Randy Stryker is an incoming freshman hoping to become a personal trainer and sees the clinic additions as a way for him to gain some experience for his major. "My major requires hands-on experience and hopefully I can get some at the clinic."
The new and improved Campus Health Clinic opened its door Aug. 4. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and will follow the semester calendar.
