The Redhawks raced four relays and John Berry competed in the long jump at the famed Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa on Friday. The rest of the team competed at the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Twilight Saturday.
Now, the Redhawks will ready themselves for the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship, which is Friday and Saturday in Cape Girardeau. Retiring head coach Joey Haines will be coaching in his last OVC Championship.
Haines has been the head coach at Southeast for 26 years and has won 20 OVC men's or women's conference championships.
At Drake, Ryan Criglar, Myron Pettigrew, Chris Poindexter, and Miles Smith ran in the the 800-meter relay and the 1600-meter relay. The Redhawks placed ninth in the 800-meter relay with a time of 1 minute, 28.19 seconds, and 16th in the 1600-meter relay with a time of 3:13.51. They will try to qualify for the NCAA Regional Championship by placing first at the OVC Championship or by running a qualifying time of 3:10.00.
Cold weather may have kept the team from qualifying this weekend.
"The temperature kept getting lower all day. It was 60 at 8 a.m. and 38 by the time the women ran the 4x100," said the decorated Haines.
The women's team was disqualified in the 400-meter relay but ran the 1600-meter relay in a time of 4:02.
John Berry placed 10th with a jump of 23 feet, 2 ¾ inches. Berry has already qualified for the NCAA Regional with a jump of 25 ¾.
At the SIUE Twilight meet, Sam Espiricueta was the lone Redhawk to leave victorious. Espiricueta threw the javelin 130-1 ½ inch to take the women's trophy.
Sophomore Paul Stemmermann ran a personal best 1:54.16 in the 800 to place second.
Three Redhawks earned second-place finishes in field events. Antoine Smith jumped 22 feet in the long jump, Tyler Terry jumped 46-1 ¼ in the triple jump and Ashley Brewer tossed the discus 155-1 1/2.
Freshman Brianna Egbuka placed third in the shot put. Junior Brandon Karcher led several Redhawks competing in the 1500 with a third place finish. Freshman Robert Delaria placed third in the 200 with a time of 22.09 and placed eighth in the 400 with a time of 49.54.
Closing the meet, two groups of Redhawk distance runners lined up in the men's 1600-meter relay. The quartet of Tom Kinder, Mark McNamara, Paul Stemmermann and Danny Stults sped to a time of 3:30.77 outracing the quartet of Brandon Karcher, Chris Loseman, Jason Lumpkin and Cody Martin who timed a 3:40.86.
Hosting the OVC Championship Friday and Saturday at the Abe Stuber Track and Field Complex just north of the Show-Me-Center, several Redhawks said they hope to have a large home crowd as they want to give Haines two more OVC titles before he ends his coaching career.
